Troubleshooting

Can't Open PlainApp in Your Browser?

Don't worry — this is almost always a simple network issue. Follow the steps below to find and fix the problem in minutes.

Works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook — any device with a browser

Quick Self-Diagnosis

Go through these checks one by one. Most issues are solved by Step 1 or Step 2.

1

Is PlainApp running on your phone?

Open PlainApp on your Android phone. Make sure the service is started and you can see a web address on the screen (like http://192.168.x.x:8080 or https://192.168.x.x:8443). If not, tap the Start button. Also check if the app shows any error messages — if it does, try restarting the service.

2

Can the phone itself open the page?

On your phone, open a browser (Chrome, Firefox, etc.) and type the same address shown in PlainApp. If the phone's own browser can't open it, the PlainApp service itself has a problem — try restarting the service or reinstalling the app.

3

Are both devices on the same Wi-Fi?

Your phone and your computer must be connected to the exact same Wi-Fi network. Check: phone is NOT on mobile data, computer is NOT on a different Wi-Fi or VPN.

4

Did you type the address correctly?

Open your computer browser and type the EXACT address shown in PlainApp. PlainApp may show multiple addresses — for example http://192.168.x.x:8080, https://192.168.x.x:8443, or plainapp.local. Try each one. Make sure you include the port number (the part after the colon, e.g. :8080 or :8443).

5

Did you see a 'Not Private' warning?

If your browser shows 'Your connection is not private' — that's normal! Click 'Advanced', then 'Proceed to site'. This happens because PlainApp uses a self-signed certificate for encryption. You can also try the http:// address instead to avoid this warning.

6

Still can't connect?

If the page won't load at all (timeout or refused), try the ping test below to check whether your computer can reach your phone, then read the detailed solutions.

Test if Your Computer Can Reach Your Phone

Open a terminal (Command Prompt on Windows, Terminal on Mac/Linux) and run this command with the IP address shown in PlainApp:

ping 192.168.x.x

If you see replies (e.g. '64 bytes from ...'):

Your computer can reach the phone. The issue is likely a browser problem — try a different browser, check for certificate warnings, or make sure you're using the correct port number.

If you see 'Request timeout' or no response:

Your computer and phone can't communicate at all. This usually means they're on different networks, AP Isolation is enabled, or a firewall is blocking the connection. Check the solutions below.

Detailed Solutions

Still not working?

If none of the above solved your problem, try these last steps:

  • Restart PlainApp on your phone (stop and start the service)
  • Restart your Wi-Fi router
  • Try a different browser on your computer
  • Try connecting from a different device (another phone or tablet) to narrow down the issue
  • As a workaround, you can use your phone's hotspot: turn on mobile hotspot on the phone, connect your computer to that hotspot, then open the PlainApp address

Frequently Asked Questions

Do my phone and computer need internet access for PlainApp to work?

No. PlainApp works entirely over local Wi-Fi. You don't need an internet connection — just both devices on the same network.

Is it safe to click 'Proceed' on the certificate warning?

Yes. The warning appears because PlainApp uses a self-signed certificate to encrypt your connection. Your data is still encrypted — the browser just can't verify who issued the certificate, which is expected on a local network.

Can I use PlainApp over mobile data (not Wi-Fi)?

Not directly. PlainApp needs a local network connection between your phone and computer. However, you can use your phone's mobile hotspot: connect your computer to the hotspot, then open PlainApp.

Why does the IP address keep changing?

Most routers assign IP addresses dynamically (DHCP). When your phone reconnects, it may get a new address. You can fix this by setting up DHCP reservation in your router, which assigns a permanent IP to your phone.

PlainApp worked before but now it doesn't — what changed?

The most common reasons are: your phone got a new IP address, your VPN was turned on, or your router settings changed. Re-check the address shown in PlainApp and go through the diagnosis steps above.

Can I access PlainApp from outside my home network?

PlainApp is designed for local network use only, which keeps it private and fast. To access it remotely, you would need to set up a VPN to your home network.
